 biography

A distinctive pianist and teacher, Jean-Pierre Lemarie, who recently relocated to New York, taught piano at the Conservatoire de Musique de Chaumont for over 17 years and had a large nimber of private pupils. He also taught chamber music at the Ecole Normale de Musique de Paris/Alfred Cortot. In addition, he served on juries for the final performance of students at more than 20 conservatories in France.

After making his piano debut at the age of 12, Jean-Pierre was admittted to the the Ecole Normale de Musique de Paris at age 15 and studied for several years with Serge Petitgirard, who had been a student of Cortot. His repertories ranges from the Baroque to modern and contemporary composers with a special interest in Bach,Beethoven, Schubert, Liszt and Chopin.

The first of four teachers who had the greatest impact on his musical development was Marie-Pierre Soma, who gives classes in chamber music at the Ecole Normale de Musique de Parisand is both an accomplish pianist and teacher. She was trained by her father, Masano Soma, a disciple of Moritz Moszkowski and Emile von Sauer, who was a student of Franz Liszt. In addition to serving as her assistant at the Ecole Normale de Musique de Paris, Jean-Pierre has maintened a lifelong relationship with her that has been both musically and personally enriching.

Fot two years, Jean-Pierre studied piano with Osavldo Skroski in Sao Paulo, Brzil and received a solid foundation in the Russian school of piano playing from him. Skroski, who had been a student of Stanislas Neuhaus and Maria Curcio, also had a strong influence on his piano technique.

He spent an intense year of study with Germaine Mounier, one of the great pedagogues of the French scool of piano playing, from whom he learned the principles of musical style, phrasing and technique.

Marie-Paule Siruguet, who studied with Maria Curcio, helped Jean-Pierre synthesize the different techniques of both French and Russian schools of music and has also coached him on various occasions.

During his career, Jean-Pierre has performed in France, Italy and Brazil. In 2003, he participated in a French TV program and performed Villa-Lobos's Bachians Brasileiras No. 4. At the invitation of Pleyel, he gave a recital  of music by Bach, Louvier and Schubert at the Carrousel du Louvres in Paris that had been arranged by Musicora in 2008 to introduce their new piano, Pleyel P204, a 7-foot size instrument.

Jean-Pierre has performed music from the classical period to the 20th century French composers as part of a piano duo, playing in music festivals from 1996-2007 and he composed a tango for two pianos that became a popular encore for many concerts.

He formed Trio Florestan, a trio for piano, violin and cello and was a finalist at the Concours International de Guerande in 1991.

Founder and artistic director of Piano a l'Affiche, an association that focused exclusively on the piano repertoire, he organized concerts, selecting both the repertoire and artists for concerts held in Chaumont in Haute-Marne from 2003 to 2008. During its last season, he performed a two-piano version of Beethoven's Ninth Symphony by Franz Liszt with Marie-Pierre Soma.

Jean-Pierre teaches at all levels from beginners to advanced pianists. In addition to sharing his consummate musicianship with the students, he transmits his passion and the unique knowledge imparted to him by his teachers to each of his pupils.
